Audio by John Anthony An audio card, or the audio function built into a motherboard provide audio signals in and out of the PC. The Headphone out port provides headphone level signals from MP3 or other audio out programs. The Microphone In jack is used to attach a microphone to bring in audio signals that a native program like Sound Recorder uses for recording. Other add-on programs can make use of this port as well. The Speaker out port provides audio signals from MP3 and other audio out programs to speakers connected the port. There are two types of speakers: Passive speakers plug into and are powered directly from the output signal provided by the 'speaker out' port on the sound card. Active speakers amplify the sound signal from the sound card and are powered by batteries of DC power supplied from an AC adapter.
